Engage In Self-Reliant Endeavours …Amaechi Charges Corps Members
Outgoing corps members have been charged to engage themselves in self-reliant endeavours instead of waiting for white-collar jobs.
Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, gave this charge yesterday during the Passing-Out Ceremony of 2009 Batch ‘B’ Corps members in Port Harcourt.
Represented by his deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, Governor Amaechi urged the corps members to assist government in reducing the rising unemployment rate in the country, advising them to focus on developing skills and expertise that would serve them well in future endeavours.
“I advise you to apply yourselves to the practical lessons of self-employment to which you were exposed in the course of your service as white collar jobs are no longer available for all employable Nigerians,” Governor Amaechi said.
He further charged the corps members to contribute their quota to “the task of achieving a united, peaceful, and egalitarian society,” noting that they are the “future leaders of this great nation and higher stakeholders,” commending them for their significant achievements, which he described as “inspirational to your successors in service”.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board and Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hon. Magnus Abe, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Special Services Bureau, Mr. Sovens Okari, commended the corps members for making remarkable impact in the lives of the rural people and the development of the State.
Announcing that ten of the corps members will receive the Governor’s Award and eleven of them the State Chairman’s Award, Hon. Abe said twenty of them will repeat the service year while some will have their service extended ranging from two weeks to five months.
Speaking, State Coordinator of the NYSC, Rivers State, Mrs. Esther Wogbo, congratulated the outgoing corps members for successfully passing through the four cardinal points of the scheme, Orientation, Primary Assignment, Community Development Service and Winding Up/Passing-Out, urging them to be job creators instead of job seekers.
Highlight of the event was the presentation of the winner of the Corper of the Year Award, 2009 Batch ‘B’ Service Year, Mr. Anyanwu Cornelius Obinna, RV/09B/0163, who graduated from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) with a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) Degree in Food Science and Technology to Governor Amaechi.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
