Bayelsa Backs Jonathan For 2011 Presidency
Bayelsa State Government has thrown its weight behind President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2011 presidential election.
The government cited what it called the age-long marginalisation of the Niger Delta region, in spite of its contribution to the economic growth of the region as a necessary factor.
Governor Timipre Sylva made this known recently at the state capital, Yenagoa, where he urged Jonathan to “go and run”, saying “you have our support”.
According to Sylva, “President Jonathan has proved himself capable of leading the country as Governor and Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“His antecedents as the Governor of the oil rich Bayelsa State in terms of his numerous achievements was a testimony”, he said.
In the same vein, the immediate past Chairman of Ekeremor Local Government Area, Hon. Robinson Etolor has described as unconstitutional, the idea of zoning the Presidency, noting that what happened in 1999 was not zoning, but “a roundtable agreement on the need to appease the people of the South-West.”
He thus stressed the need for Jonathan to contest the 2011 election, saying that “this would afford him the opportunity to implement the seven point agenda.”
Etolor said the demise of Late President Umaru Yar’Adua should not be a premise to jettison his good ideas to transform the country, adding that this assignment could only be carried out by President Jonathan, noting that they conceived the idea together.“Going by the PDP constitution, Late President Yar’Adua’s term will be completed in 2015, and now that he is no more, President Jonathan should be allowed to complete his term,” he said.
However, observers believed that the new stand and views of the state government officials were a way of seeking favour from President Jonathan, judging from the insult and abuse he received from government agents in the state during his tenure as Vice President.
