RSG Bans Illegal Traffic Task Forces … Endorses TIMARIV
In a bid to check the inceasant harassment, arresting and impounding of motorists and vehicles in Port Harcourt and its environs by illegal task force groups, the Rivers State Government has put machinery in place to arrest and prosecute any person or group of persons that pose themselves as the Ministry of Transport task force.
The Rivers State Ministry of Transport stated this in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Gogo J. Isong and made available to The Tide on Wednesday in Port Harcourt.
According to the permanent secretary, the ministry has nothing to do with such illegal task forces, saying that the only body recognised by law to arrest traffic violators is the Rivers State Traffic Management Authority (TIMARIV) or the Law Enforcement Agents.
He lamented over the nefarious activities of the illegal task forces who hijacked the legitimate function of the Rivers State Traffic Management Authority for their own self aggrandisement and embarrassment to the motorists and the general public in Port Harcourt an its environs, warning those engaged in such illegal course to desist from the act as it constitutes criminality, also punishable by law.
He remarked that by this statement, the ministry is hereby advising the general public to report any such group of persons arresting and extorting money from motorists illegally to Rivers State Traffic Management Authority or Law Enforcement Agents for prosecution.
Isong solicited for the support and co-operation of motorists and the public towards the efforts of the state government to decongest and sanitise the flow of traffic in the city.
