Road Accidents Claim 24 In C’River
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in Cross River says 24 persons died in 68 recorded motor accidents in the Calabar metropolis between January and March.
Mr Taiwo Eseyin, the Sector Commander of the FRSC, gave the figures in an interview with newsmen in Calabar.
He said those who lost their lives comprised 13 males and 11 females, while 73 others, made up of 64 males and nine females, were injured during the period.
The sector commander said that 236 people were involved in road accidents in the first quarter, adding that most of the accidents were caused by carelessness and over-speeding.
“From what we have seen so far, most people are careless or lack concentration; some over-speed in spite of persistent warnings on speed violation,” he said.
Eseyin said the accident rate had been on the increase since 2009 “because people are no longer patient on the road”.
He said the commission lacked equipment for towing vehicles away from accident spots, noting that tow vehicles would help ease the flow of traffic immediately accidents occurred if they were provided.
The sector commander appealed to road users to be more patient, drive with care and avoid violating speed limits on the road.
“If they can do this, definitely the number of crashes on the roads will reduce,” he said.
Eseyin said the FRSC apprehended 18 persons for traffic light violation and 11 others for not using the seat belt during the period.
According to him, 34 motorcyclists were arrested for failure to use crash helmets, 25 persons booked for number plate violation and four others for using tinted windscreens.
