RSG Moves To Refocus Education
The Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Dame Alice Lawrence Nemi has reiterated the determination of the present administration to chart a new path in the education of its citizenry.
Dame Nemi stated this while receiving the report of the committee for Registration and Revalidation of New and Existing Private Schools in Rivers State.
The Education Commissioner noted that government was poised to set uniform standards for public and private primary and secondary schools, saying that the national schools curriculum is the same for all pupils and standards.
She promised that the report of the committee would be studied and implemented with dispatch to enable private schools in the state worked in consonance with the new spirit in education, adding that a desk would be created to ensure the effective collation of data from proprietors of private schools.
Submitting the report, the chairman of the committee, Mr Akuro George, explained that there is immediate need for the ministry to focus more attention on the manner private schools are being operated in the state in order to actualise its objectives of setting high standards in education.
He noted that there is a proliferation of private nursery, primary and secondary schools operating without registration and approval by the Ministry of Education.
“The operations of these schools are illegal as they derogate from the express permission of the law”, he said.
Mr George thanked the commissioner for the opportunity given to the committee to serve the state.
