Multiple Road Taxes Mar Co-operative Vehicle Loan Scheme
Activities of road tax agents and taskforce operatives that impound and harass commercial vehicles on the road has haunted the continuation of vehicle loan scheme embarked upon by the Rivers Transport and Investment Co-operative Union Limited (RTICUL), aimed at empowering its members.
Speaking on the matter in a chat with The Tide, the President of RTICL, Mr. Tubonimi Wokoma said that the efforts made by his union towards empowering transport co-operative members is being undermined by those he described as illegal taskforce operators.
He said that the law establishing co-operative, exempts it from all forms of taxes, but wondered why people hide under some government agencies and institution to perpetuate illegality and extort money from transport operators.
Mr. Wokoma explained that his union entered into agreement with a micro-finance bank in Port Harcourt for some hire-purchase vehicle, which the first batch have benefited.
He said his union can not go for the second batch because of the activities of taskforce who forcefully extort money and impound cooperative vehicles, a condition which had made it difficult for them to meet up with the daily obligations of the union.
Mr. Wokoma pointed out that several reports have been lodged at the appropriate quarters, but that no serious action have been carried out, and wondered why people this time around feast on illegalities, hereby making illegality to be legal.
