Six New Ports Underway In Lower Niger
As parts of efforts to complement the existing ports in the country, the federal government of Nigeria has said that six new ports will be constructed along the lower River Niger.
Apart from that, the construction of the additional ports is also designed to ease the stress that road users’ experience or face in the delivery of cargoes across the country.
Source from the federal ministry of information has disclosed that the federal government, as a first step has given approval for the construction of a new port terminal and ancillary facilities at Baro, Niger State, at a cost of N3.6 billion.
The source further disclosed that the approval was given at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, which was presided by the president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in Abuja.
It was gathered that the construction of the new ports will go a long way in boosting economic activities in the country, and as well ease the stress on the road.
Accordingly, the president’s masterplan for water transport sector is designed to build additional six ports along the lower River Niger at the completion of the dredging of the River Niger, it was gathered.
Meanwhile, the concept of container depots, otherwise known as the Dry land ports policy of the former administration of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, where several depots were approved in the south-east are yet to be fully implemented, as it was aimed at easing port congestion.
