Group Opposes Establishment Of Police Anti-Terrorism Unit In A’Ibom
Some residents of Akwa Ibom, under the umbrella of Akwa Ibom Leaders Vanguard, have kicked against the proposed establishment of anti-terrorism unit under the state police command.
Speaking on behalf of the group in a press conference in Uyo on Monday, Sen. Anietie Okon, said Akwa Ibom remained very peaceful and did not require the anti-terrorism unit.
The group said that terrorism in the country had been constrained to the north eastern part of the country where more attention was needed.
It accused the police authorities of acting a script to assist the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state to wield its federal might.
It warned of dire consequences if the Inspector General of Police IGP Ibrahim Idris, would go ahead to establish an anti terrorism unit in the state.
It said that there was no justification for such a unit in a state acclaimed by security agencies to be one of the most peaceful in the country.
“For the avoidance of doubt, we will resist the attempt to balkanise and destroy our state under the guise of fighting nonexistent terrorism,” the group said.
It also expressed doubts over the ability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct credible polls in country.
“INEC said that they wanted to conduct a free, fair and credible election. We have been waiting patiently to see the actions of the federal might as far as this election is concerned.”
