UNICEF Votes N4m For C’River Communities
The United Nations Childrens’ Fund (UNICEF), has earmarked a budget estimate of N4 million to reach riverine communities in Cross River State in her forthcoming measles immunisation exercise.
UNICEF’s and World Health Organization (WHO) consultant on Integrated Measles Campaign (IMC), Mrs. Sherifat Lawal, disclosed this during a press briefing to herald the exercise slated for 2016, in Calabar.
According to her, UNICEF has begun a micro-planning in order to ensure that all the needed human and material resources for the exercise are in place.
While noting UNICEF’s resolve to wipe measles out of Nigeria just like polio, she attributed the continuous spread of the disease in the country to the underutilisation of measles vaccines.
Lawal, who said that the vaccination exercise was expected to hold between 28 January and February 1, 2016, in all the 17 Southern states, urged parents to take the exercise seriously because measles is a very contagious disease.
Even as she assured Cross Riverans of total coverage during the exercise, the consultant said “This is the micro plan we did for the State, taking care of all the communities.
“In the riverine areas, we made a budget of over 4million for the riverine activities alone, which we pray will be approved because it’s by the donor agency; not by the government,” she explained.
According to her, “some said they are hiring their boats for N30, 000 at Odukpani, some said N25, 000, in different areas. They have submitted their estimate and we have collated and forwarded it to UNICEF because it will be taken care of by the organisation.”
