Troupe, NGO Unite In Drama To Fight Child Abuse
Oron Union Cultural Troupe and Stepping Stones Nigeria Child Empowerment Foundation are collaborating on the use of drama to preach against child abuse.
The drama team of Oron Union is currently on a performance tour of selected public primary and secondary schools in Oron communities in southern Akwa Ibom.
Chief Ann Medekong, Coordinator of Oron Union Cultural Troupe told newsmen in Oron recently that the organisations were working to reduce child witch stigmatisation in Akwa Ibom.
Medekong said that Stepping Stones, a child rights focused NGO, a faith based organisation chose drama as a tool to fight child abuse because it mirrors the ills in the society.
“Using life drama, you get a feedback from the children and always with life drama you have a direct relationship with the audience.
“If you do television, you don’t know what your audience is thinking; especially here that you do not have a very good feedback system electronically.
“But in life drama you know exactly what the people are feeling about it,” Medekong said.
The troupe coordinator said that they targeted schools to ensure that the belief in child witchcraft and negative impact on children were changed in the minds of coming generations.
“Oron Union Cultural Troupe in conjunction with the PACT campaign, is a member of NGO fighting the abuse of children, according to the Childs Rights Law of Akwa Ibom State 2008.
“We have been to all the 31 local governments of Akwa Ibom State with the life drama.
“But we are trying to target schools because the young can change, sometimes the old refuse to change their beliefs and those beliefs are pulling us back, they are not pushing us forward. “And we still have not reached all the schools, so until we reach every secondary school, we will not be satisfied and we will not give up,’’ Medekong said.
She said that the drama tours, combined with dance and music performances had been successful in the campaign against child abuse across the state.
