…Commissions Projects, Dec
The Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Amaechi, has assured the completion of some key projects in the State by December, including some new model primary and secondary schools and the Rumuokwuta/Choba Road.
Governor Amaechi made the disclosure, Wednesday, at the command performance of Chinua Achebe’s, “A Man of the People,” as part of the 2011 Garden City Literary Festival in Government House, Port Harcourt.
He stated that President Goodluck Jonathan would be in Rivers State to commission some of the completed model schools in December and pledged the completion of the Rumuokwuta/Choba Road.
According to Amaechi, “the road project when completed would ease traffic and access to the University of Port Harcourt” which he described as a great institution that has produced two governors and a President.
He also promised to tar the access road to one of the new model schools to be sited within the University.
Meanwhile, Governor Amaechi has guaranteed the construction of a new Faculty of Humanities building to be named after Rivers State-born literary icon, Dr. Elechi Amadi.
Thanking the Theatre Arts Department of the University of Port Harcourt for the wonderful performance of one of Prof. Chinua Achebe’s political satires, Amaechi emphasised that the book was a true depiction of Nigeria. “For public officers who want to copy Chief Nanga, they should read the book again,” he advised.
The Governor declared that the State Government would continue to fund the Garden City Literary Festival to make it self-sustaining, and expressed the hope that the festival would help discover budding writers and artists.
