Environmental Expert Urges ICT Use In Rural Development
An expert in planning called on the Federal Government to use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to transform the lives of rural dwellers.
An Environmental Resources and Spatial Planning Consultant, Dr Oluwole Alade-Ojomo, made the call in an interview with newsmen in Lagos.
He said that the majority of rural dwellers were still carrying out their activities with traditional methods, most of which, he said, were outdated.
According to him, smallholder farmers should be conversant with the use of ICT in protecting the environment and improving their wellbeing.
Alade-Ojomo, also the Managing Director, Richard and Empress, Environmental and Spatial Development Associates, Lagos, said that the rural dwellers needed to be taught how to apply modern technologies.
He said that ICT had helped developed nations in conserving their environment, adding that it reduced environmental risk and ecological scarcities.
“Nigeria can achieve a similar feat if we can improve in infrastructure and usage of ICT in communities.
The use of appropriate ICT solutions enhance socio-economic development and creates a greener economy. Greener economies are achievable only when they are rooted locally.
“We have to start by introducing and firmly establishing an ICT culture in our rural areas,” he said.
Alade-Ojomo said the Federal Government should ensure that the use of ICT was embedded in its developmental plans.
He said that ICT would enhance sustainable agricultural practices, efficiency and maintain biodiversity through proper application.
