FG Plans Solar-powered Water Treatment Plant
The Federal Government will provide 360 units of solar-powered water treatment plant across the country to reduce the incidence of water-related diseases.
Chief Obadiah Ando, the Minister of Water Resources, disclosed this last Monday to stakeholders who converged in Abuja for the Presidential Water Summit.
He said that from 2011, each state would be provided with 10 units of the treatment plant state at the pilot stage, to ensure the availability of potable water, especially in the rural areas.
“We are going to use the facility for intervention in rural areas; we are also going to provide water and sanitation facilities to increase water coverage in rural areas,’’ he said.
The Minister said the summit was organised to enable the ministry to present its roadmap for the water sector stakeholders to discuss on how to implement the document.
Dr Godknows Igali, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, said the objective of the roadmap was to put Nigeria back on track to meet the MDGs target by 2015.
He said the plan would also help Nigeria achieve Vision 20: 2020 as well as the Africa Water Vision by 2025.
“The overall impact of this roadmap will be the achievement of 75 per cent of national water supply access and 65 per cent national sanitation access by the year 2015.
“The impact will also be the achievement of 100 per cent coverage in water and sanitation by the year 2025,’’ he said.
Igali said the roadmap would be presented to President Goodluck Jonathan for consideration and his official mandate for implementation.
In his remarks, Senate President David Mark pledged the commitment of the Upper Legislative Chamber to the provision of water to Nigerians through effective legislation.
Represented by Senetor Bassey Ewa Henshaw, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Water Resources, Mark said the development of the water sector was important to achieving the MDG targets by 2015.
“On our part, we shall focus on legislation that will ensure equitable and fair distribution of water resources to put an end to water shortage in the country,’’ he said.
In his goodwill message, Dr Babangida Aliyu, who spoke on behalf of the Governors’ Forum, assured the Federal Government of the governors commitment to provide potable water and basic sanitation for Nigerians.
“We are willing to support the Federal Government to make sure it attains its plan to meet the MDG goal in the sector by 2015 as well as the Vision 20:2020 and other development agenda,’’ he said.
Our correspondent reports that the Nigeria Water Sector Roadmap was presented to the Vice President Namadi Sambo by the Minister of Water Resource, Chief Obadiah Ando.
Sambo received the document on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Dangote Refinery Resumes Gantry Self-Collection Sales, Tuesday
This is revealed in an email communication from the Group Commercial Operations Department of the company, and obtained by Newsmen, at the Weekend.
The company explained that while gantry access is being reinstated, the free delivery service remains operational, with marketers encouraged to continue registering their outlets for direct supply at no additional cost.
The statement said “in reference to the earlier email communication on the suspension of the PMS self-collection gantry sales, please note that we will be resuming the self-collection gantry sales on the 23rd of September, 2025”.
Dangote Petroleum Refinery also apologised to its partners for any inconvenience the suspension may have caused, while assuring stakeholders of its commitment to improving efficiency and ensuring seamless supply.
“Meanwhile, please be informed that we are aggressively delivering on the free delivery scheme, and it is still open for registration. We encourage you to register your stations and pay for the product to be delivered directly to you for free. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding,” it added.
It would be recalled that in September 18, 2025, Dangote refinery had suspended gantry-based self-collection of petroleum products at its depot. The move was designed to accelerate the adoption of its Free Delivery Scheme, which guarantees direct shipments of petroleum products to registered retail outlets across Nigeria.
The refinery stressed that the earlier decision was an operational adjustment aimed at streamlining efficiency in the downstream supply chain.
