Group under the aegis
of Oniopi Patriotic fellowship (OPF) has said that arrangements are underway to make pupils in the rural areas Information and Communications Technology (ICT) experts.
The OPF Sheriff, Dr Joseph A. Orlu Chukwu, made the remark while donating 1000 exercise books and 10 packets of biro to the pupils of State School 1, Omerelu, Wednesday in the area.
He said since ICT has become the order of the day, the group which he described as a pacesetter, will soon consider the issues of laptop provision and other ICT tools.
Orlu Chukwu, said the idea was to ground them on ICT usage, so that it would not appear strange to them upon admission to secondary and tertiary in institutions.
Describing the would be ICT programme as self sponsored, he said his organization would source a suitable centre in the community to site it where every one would access the internet with ease.
He pointed out that, poor power supply would be the likely challenge, since the internet is meant to serve for 24 hours.
Meanwhile, he has called on OPF members not to relent in their efforts to encourage academic growth in the community, adding that it is for the well being of the entire community and beyond.
He has also called on the State Governor, Chief Ezenwo Nyesom Wike to come to the community’s aid by renovating the school, which according to him, is in bad shape.
A representative of the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), Mr Izoma Godwin, who expressed joy over the association’s action, said the board would be interested in the data of the books and other items.
In their respective responses the Headmistress of the school, Mrs Emelda Iyie, and the Chairman, Parent Teachers Association (PTA), Mr John O. Nwuche, have lauded OPF over the kind gesture, while calling on them to make it an annual event in order to encourage hard work among the pupils.
The Tide learnt that OPF was a huge education crusader in Omerelu some decades ago, but ceased operations in recent times.
