The Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, on Monday, presented N20m cheque to the widow of a Nigerian Air Force officer, Sergeant D.F. Ekemughan, who died from injuries sustained from an explosion at the NAF Base in Port Harcourt in December 2023.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, the governor said though no amount of money could equate Ekemughan’s life, the money was just a demonstration of his commitment to the welfare of security men and their families.
A statement on Monday by the Head of the Press Unit in the SSG’s office, Juliana Masi, quoted the governor saying: “We are here to let you know that we share in this sad process with you. You have to be strong and accept the reality of life as a leader to your children now because God expects you to take up that responsibility.
“The Rivers State Government appreciates the services of your husband. Keeping your faith in God, respect for your husband and responsibility to train your children to become worthy citizens of Nigeria should guide your conduct.”
The Commander, 115 Special Operations Group, Nigerian Air Force Base, Port Harcourt, Air Commodore A. Idris, said the officer died from injuries sustained from a secondary explosion while in active service within the base.
Meanwhile, Fubara has congratulated the Super Eagles of Nigeria for their performance and commended them for their resilience throughout the tournament at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The governor noted that despite emerging second, the Super Eagles have once again, re-established Nigeria’s position as a strong footballing nation to be reckoned with in Africa.
Congratulating all Nigerians for the feat, the governor, in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Boniface Onyedi, said the team worked so hard with dedication and unbridled passion to emerge second though they tried their utmost to win the coveted trophy.
Fubara particularly acknowledged the skillful goalkeeping and exceptional contributions of Super Eagles’ goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, a true Rivers son, who demonstrated the dogged spirit that put the team in the finals for this celebrated second place.
The governor assured of his commitment to developing sports in the state as a means of empowering Rivers youths and galvanizing a major income earner that will contribute to boosting the economy of the state.
