US Envoy Arrives Nigeria, Today
The United States Department of State has confirmed that the country’s Special Advisor on International Disability Rights, Sara Minkara, will arrive Abuja, today, for a three-day official visit.
In a statement in Washington, DC, and made available to The Tide in Port Harcourt, yesterday, indicated that Minkara would be joined by the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour, Lisa Peterson, in meetings with civil society, government, and international organisation representatives in advance of the country’s 2023 elections.
The statement stated that during the meetings, Minkara would emphasise the importance of free and fair elections that are accessible to all and encourage persons with disabilities to actively participate in the political process.
“Minkara will take stock of each country’s efforts to reshape the narrative around disability emphasising the rights of persons with disabilities and the value they bring to all sectors of society when fully included,” the statement added.
Earlier, Minkara had travelled to Doha, Qatar, on October 1 to meet with government officials, civil society, and like-minded partners, and to participate in the World Information Summit for Health (WISH).
The summit, organised by the Qatar Foundation, was designed to address health innovation and advances in the field with a focus on disability and sports.
Minkara also/ represented the United States on the panel, “Accessible By Design: Building a Legacy of Inclusion”, and took part in a joint session to discuss, draft, and adopt a summit communiqué on equitable access to sports and leisure activities.
Her duty tour of the country ended yesterday.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
