RSG Saves N11bn From Law School Project
The Rivers State Government has said that it has saved a whooping N10billion to N11billion from the construction of the Port Harcourt Campus of the Nigerian Law School project.
The state Commissioner for Works, Dr Dax Alabo George-Kelly, who made this disclosure in his office during a courtesy call on him by the Rivers State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, said the project was also delivered on schedule with no additional cost.
He attributed the feat to proper cost management.
“It is by proper cost management. The government saved a lot that would have been spent using large construction companies, but indigenous companies were used, and alot of money was saved. We still achieved the same quality within the same budget”, he said.
He said as then special adviser on special projects, he supervised over 40 projects.
George-Kelly also told the visiting quantity surveyors that the government would begin another round of projects’ commissioning within the next two weeks, and listed some of the projects to be commissioned to include, the Waterlines flyover, Ogbunabali dualised road and the VIP Lounge at the Port Harcourt International Airport.
The rest are the 5,000-capacity auditorium at the NYSC Orientation Camp; Community Secondary School, Obuama; and Community Secondary School, Tombia; in Degema Local Government Area, amongst others.
He said that the administration would not leave any project uncompleted to incoming administration, stressing that even the 11th and12th flyover projects, which were just awarded, would be completed in the next 10 months.
George-Kelly charged the surveyors to engage in capacity development as well as delve into other areas of engineering technology.
He also charged them to be good ambassadors of the institute by bringing value to the profession.
Earlier,Deputy Chairman/Chairman-elect of the institute, Jamaibi Numbere, had said the visit was to felicitate with George-Kelly over his appointment as a commissioner aswell as thank Governor Nyesom Wike for finding him worthy for the appointment.
He commended the commissioner for his numerous support to the institute even during its last annual general meeting (AGM) in Port Harcourt.
He appealed to the commissioner to assist the institute with a bus to enable it properly coordinate its activities.
