Low COVID-19 Vaccination Turnout Worries RSG
The Rivers State Government has said that it was worried over the low turnout of residents for COVID-19 vaccination in the state.
The Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board, Dr. Aggriye Harry, disclosed this during the flag off of Maternal New Born and Child Health Week in Degema, recently.
Speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Harry said that statistics available so far reveal that less than a million people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in the state.
He said the figure was not too impressive considering the efforts and investments put in by the government for the programme.
“People are getting more relaxed with COVID-19.
“The best way to stop death from COVID-19 is to go for vaccination. Less than a million people have been vaccinated in Rivers State, and it is getting more difficult to get people to go for vaccination”, he said.
He also regretted that few people observe the COVID-19 protocol such as regular washing of hands and use of face masks, and attributed this to some religious beliefs.
Harry said the board will continue to sensitise the people on the importance of COVID-19 vaccination, while also urging people to continue to observe all the COVID-19 protocols in order to be safe.
The permanent secretary called on pregnant women and nursing mothers to avoid patronising quacks and unlicensed doctors, while intensifying prenatal and post natal care.
He said government health centres were available in every local government area of the state with qualified personnel who would attend to them free of charge.
According to him, within the week, no fees would be charged by any government health institution in the local government area.
In his speech, Chairman of Degema local Government Areas, Hon. Michael Williams called on the women to report any government health centres that charge any fee for disciplinary action.
He also commended the board for choosing Degema for the flag off of the ceremony.
