Ohanaeze Ndigbo Decries Dwindling Enrolment In Basic Education
Members of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Enugu State have expressed deep concern over what they described as disturbing problem of dwindling enrolment figures currently bedevilling basic education sub-sector the State.
The president of the association in Enugu State, Prof. Fred O. Eze, made their feelings known over the weekend on the occasion of the “Enugu State Education Summit 2021”, held at the Ohanaeze Secretariat, Trans-Ekulu, Enugu.
Eze explained that Ohanaeze Ndigbo Enugu State organised the summit considering the fact that in Enugu State, “education is our heritage and greatest industry which must be preserved and protected”.
This, he went on, explains the huge investment the Enugu State government has committed to the sector, adding, “we cannot sit idle and watch the tremendous goodwill of His Excellency on the education sector go to waste”.
Continuing, Eze further said, “we call on all and sundry, who may possess the capacity to urgently intervene in saving the basic education sub-sector in Enugu State.
“ In the short term, we call on our politicians, businessmen, top public servants, philanthropists, Traditional Rulers etc, to please step up and adopt a primary or secondary school in their communities and provide material and moral support to the pupils.
“Traditional Rulers and town union executives should take responsibility in supervising schools in their domains, monitor the teachers and make reports to the appropriate authorities.
“We also recommend that authorities in the education sector should step up on the supervision and training of teachers for optimum performance”.
He, therefore, thanked Governor Ugwuanyi for providing the enabling environment and logistics for hosting of the summit.
The occasion was attended by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uche Eze, the immediate past President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, Local Government Chairmen, Religious Leaders, Traditional Rulers, Labour Leaders, Town Union Executives, among others.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
