RSG Sets Up Technical C’ttee On Cause Of Dead Fishes
The Rivers State Government has constituted a technical committee to study causes of dead fishes littering the Atlantic coasts of Bonny and Andoni Local Government Areas.
The committee is coming barely a week after reports of massive death of fishes floating on the state waterways.
Commissioner for Environment, Dr Igbiks Tamuno who disclosed this at a press briefing to mark the 50th anniversary of the World Earth Day in Port Harcourt said the committee is made up of both experts from the University of Port Harcourt and Rivers State University.
Tamuno said samples of the fishes have been collected and are now undergoing laboratory analysis.
The Commissioner said a committee comprising indigenes of the affected communities and the local government councils have also been constituted with a charge to ensure collection and disposal of all floating dead fishes.
Dr Tamuno used the occasion to renew the call on inhabitants of littoral communities in Andoni and Bonny Local Government Areas not to eat the fishes.
On the issue of the soot, the commissioner said soot problem will be taken care of by the Government Modular Refinery project, adding that series of meetings and consultations were held with stakeholders.
According to him, a technical committee to design a roadmap for the modular refinery project has been set up, stressing that investors forum will be put together where investors will be invited to key into the project.
Tamuno also said efforts are being made by the government to check illegal dredging activities in the state.
The World Earth Day is celebrated April 22nd of every year.
