Ogoni Clean-Up: HYPREP Hands Over Nine Sites To Contractors
The Ogoni clean-up project entered the second stage last Thursday as the Minister of Environement, Dr Mohammed Abubakar handed over oil spill impacted sites to nine contractors to clear the pollution mess that has been associated with the area several years now.
It was a thing of joy for the people of Okuluebu-Ogale Community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State as the community received nine of the 36 sites handed over to contractors.
The Minister, handed over the nine sites to the contractors, with a charge to them, to carry out the exercise in accordance with the specifications and recommendations of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Report.
While assuring that the Federal Government was not going to compromise standards on the clean-up project, Abubakar urged the contractors to carry along the people of the community in the course of the job.
On his part, the visibly elated Project Coordinator of HYPREP, Dr Marvin Dekil, said the handover of the sites to the contractors underscored the fact that the agency was committed to handing over a clean environment to the Ogoni people at the end of the day, and urged the contractors to do the needful by carrying along the people of the area to ensure that they benefit maximally from the project.
He further assured that HYPREP would do everything within its power to ensure that it delivers its core mandate of remediating the Ogoni environment as recommended in the UNEP Report, describing the event as another important milestone in the clean-up project.
The Paramount Ruler of Ogale, Emere Godwin Bebe Okpabi said Ogale community was the most polluted in the entire Ogoniland and assured that the community would give the contractors 100 percent support and cooperation, while urging them not to short-change the people of the area.
The Minister and his entourage had earlier in the day been treated to the traditional hospitality of the Eleme people at the Palace of the King of Elemeland in Aleto Eleme Community, during a courtesy visit to the King, HRM Emere (Dr) Philip Obele, Oneh-eh Eleme X1, where he (the minister) was equally decorated in the full traditional regalia of an Eleme Chief, amid funfair and conviviality.
The handover of the 36 new sites for clean-up to contractors would bring to 57 the total number of lots to be handed over in the clean-up of Ogoniland by HYPREP as 21 contractors are already working in 21 sites in the area.
