Female Circumcision: RVHA Proposes Three Years Jail Term
Culprits of female circumcision are now to face stringent punishment in the state.
This comes after the House gave the Rivers State Female Circumcision Abolition Amendment Bill of 2019 a second reading.
The Assembly adopted a “Whole House Committee” debate and vote to quickly amend the law of 2001, which many legislators averred was weak with loopholes.
Ibani said the essence of the amendment was to align it with federal law.
Henceforth, anybody caught carrying out the act was to pay a fine of N200,000 or go to jail for three years.
“No law is absolute”, Ibani stated, adding that, “we would continue to look at laws and to keep with trend”.
