‘Wike’s Funding Of RSU Stalled ASUU Strike’
A professor of Economics with the Rivers State University and member of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Ayodele Momodu says the lecturers in the university did not join the national strike in appreciation of the governor’s support to the university.
Prof. Momodu, in a chat with The Tide in his office in Port Harcourt said since the governor, Chief Nyesom Wike assumed office in 2015, the university has enjoyed a new lease of life both in infrastructure and funding.
He reasoned that the governor’s good gesture and relationship with the authorities of the university compelled ASUU not to join the national strike as it would amount to lack of appreciation to the governor.
“ If you have asked for few concessions and if you have been granted so many, what is the moral of going for strike.
Morally speaking, we don’t’ have any reason to join the strike because the governor may not have done all our requests, but at least he has done so much for the university since he came on board “ Momodu declared.
He added that ,”I believe that sometime, it’s good to concede even if it goes against popular opinion”.
The university don further stated that the upgradement and expansion of the university is enjoying today was the handiwork of Wike, as he commended him for the new College of Medicine and Faculty of Social Sciences including other courses now being offered by the institution.
Enumerating benefits of the new status of the university, Momodu explained that it would boost manpower training and expertise in the state.
He however recommended the need for more funding to boost research and teaching in order to improve teaching and knowledge in specialized areas.
