PH Petrol Tanker Fire: Death Toll Hits Six …Govt Orders Arrest Of Driver

The death toll from a petrol tanker which fell and spilled its content before going up in flames at the Rumuola axis of Port Harcourt on Christmas Day has risen to six.
The Tide reports that the tanker fell at Rumuola, spilled its content into a drainage that link the Stadium Road and the Mopol 19 barrack and ignited a wild fire.
The Tide recalled that at the wake of the incident, a mother and her two children were burnt to death while they were sleeping behind the Mopol 19 barrack.
Aside the initial death, nine persons were injured, while several shanties and other property worth millions of Naira were destroyed.
But as at Wednesday evening, three more persons who were among those rushed to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital died while on admission after the incident.
This brings to six the number of persons so far killed as a result of the petrol tanker explosion on the wee hours of Christmas day.
Reacting to the incident, the Rivers State Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources, Hon. Albert Miller said the state government is on the trail of the tanker driver to get him arrested.
Miller said the trucks were not supposed to move by the day, saying, “The government is doing a lot to get the driver wherever he is. As I speak with you Ministry staff are with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) office with the tanker number to knoe exactly who owns it.
“We believe that the FRSC will help us with the identity of the owner of the truck. So that the police will be involved. That way we can get him wherever he is,” he said.
He expressed sadness that information from eyewitness revealed that the driver was on high speed, saying, “They (tanker drivers) are not supposed to move by day.
“Even when they move by night, if you find out from eyewitness how this tanker fell, he was on high speed and he wanted to bend into another street.
“The petroleum industry union should help us because lives have been lost and we are still counting. It is very painful because it seems everyone takes the law into their hands,” the Commissioner lamented.
