Collapse Building: Body Of Rotarian Recovered, As Death Toll Climbs To 16
Three weeks after a 7-storey building collapse along Woji Road in GRA phase 2, Port Harcourt, Rivers State capital, the body of a Rotarian, Morgan Ihionu has been recovered, bringing the death toll to 16.
The Tide recalled that members of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Gateway have been on hand providing food and water for rescue workers and volunteers.
President elect of Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Gateway, Arinze Akupue during a chat with newsmen had urged the rescuers to double their efforts in ensuring that more trapped workers, including one their own Rotarian Ihionu are rescued.
It was leant that a social media rant by Rotarian Ihionu’s sister led to increase rescue operation at the site of the collapse building which occurred on November 23.
Meanwhile the Nigerian Red Cross Society had decried the attitude of the public towards the group, saying they have spent three weeks helping in the rescue operation without any form of support.
Chairman, Nigerian Red Cross Society, Port Harcourt Division, Mr. Yibotemeka Kalio disclosed this during a two day training the body organized for journalists in Rivers State.
He said, “We have spent three weeks at the site of the collapse building. But nobody is asking us (Red Cross). We fund almost all our activities there. We brought our own food, fuel our vehicles and almost everything. As it is presently if there is any disaster they will still call us and we will respond. That is the zeal of the Red Cross,” Kalio stated.
