Police Arrest Three Over Calabar Monarch’s Death
The Police in Cross River State have arrested three suspects involved in the murder of a village head in Ikot Omin village, Ntufam Ekong Itu Omin.
Barr. Ayei Okpa, who is the legal adviser to the community, confirmed the arrest.
He told journalists on Monday that the village head was gruesomely murdered in his house in Ikot Omin in Calabar and urged the police to intensify efforts to prosecute the suspects with a view to serving as a deterrent to others.
Okpa lauded the police for arresting the suspects, but charged the police not to delay in prosecuting them in court while intensifying efforts in arresting others who are at large.
He said that the arrest of the suspects may also be connected to series of assassinations that occurred in Calabar in recent times.
“It was a stroke of fate; the uncovering of the suspected murderers of late Ntufam Ekong Itu Omin was a by- product of investigations launched by the state police command into recent secret cult clashes within the Calabar metropolis”, he said.
The lawyer, however, urged the state government and the police authority to thoroughly investigate the alleged roles played by one community leader, Chief Asuquo Ekpenyong and a youth leader, Mr Edim Edim in the murder of the late village head.
Commenting on the matter, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Cross River State Command, Irene Ugbo said the police were doing everything possible to ensure that the suspects were prosecuted, adding that all suspects involved in criminal matters would be properly investigated.
