PIB: MOSOP Condemns Host Community Fund Removal
The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has condemned the decision of the Senate to drop the Host Community Fund from the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), and called on the Red Chamber to rescind its decision to avoid the angst of the people of the Niger Delta region.
MOSOP President, Legborsi Saro Pyagbara, made the condemnation in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital while speaking with journalists.
He said that the removal of the Host Community Fund in the current PIB by the 8th Assembly is detrimental to the economic survival of the Niger Delta people and should be stoutly resisted.
Pyagbara told journalist that the passage of the PIB bill was over-due in the National Assembly, adding that the purported removal of the Host Community Fund, which is the backbone of the bill, was uncalled for and an invitation to anarchy.
He said that that provision of the bill was the only part that assures community participation in the entire oil industry.
The MOSOP president stressed that if the Host Community Fund is removed as has been speculated, it would dash the hope of host communities which have suffered pain, environmental degradation and pollution arising from oil spill that has, over the years, impoverish the people.
Legborsi, therefore, tasked the 8th Assembly to retrace its step and avoid any attempt to invite the wrath of the Niger Delta people.
He regretted that the communities and people in the region have supported the country economically but have nothing to show for the decades of oil exploration and exploitation in the region.
