LCCI Tasks FG On Diversification
The Lagos Chamber of
Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has urged the Federal Government to fast track its efforts on the nation’s economic diversification agenda.
This was stated in Lagos on Monday by the LCCI President, Dr Nike Akande during the chamber’s review of its first quarter economic activities.
Akande called on the government to enthrone a new regime of business-friendly environment in the country to promote economic activities on a sustainable basis, stressing that the nation’s business environment has been experiencing some challenges, which have impacted negatively on business performance in the country.
According to the LCCI statement some of the challenges include, scarcity of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), dwindling power situation and poor access to foreign exchange for business, adding that the prolonged scarcity of PMS in the past few weeks has taken a major toll on business.
Akande explained that apart from the considerable loss of manhours as a result of long fuel queues and associated traffic issues on the highways, the fuel scarcity challenge also promotes proliferation of ‘black markets’ across major cities in the country.
The chamber therefore advised the government to liberalise the downstream oil sector exploit diversified energy sources, adopt a flexible exchange rate regime and evolve a business-friendly monetary policy, urging the federal government to reform the budget process for timely passage and liaise effectively with the legislators to ensure that various pending bills are expeditiously attended to on time.
She said government’s liberalisation of the downstream petroleum sector for unfettered private sector participation and investment would improve efficiency, attract more private investment, generate more employment opportunities and uwarcably reduce the pressure on the country’s foreign reserve.
She further said the chamber is committed to supporting the various programmes of the government to promote the diversification of the economy currently dominated by crude oil.
On power situation, she added that there is an urgent need to explore alternative models of power provision which focuses on diversification of energy sources and decentralisation of power supply channel.
She explained that the high dependence on gas pipelines from the Niger Delta is characterised by high vulnerability risks which the economy and the citizens can no longer bear.
She said government must review the current framework.
