Spills: Community Protest Agips Inaction
Indigenes of Nembe Community in Bayelsa State have protested against the alleged refusal of oil giant, Agip Oil Company of Nigeria, to commence clean-up of spills that occurred in the recently.
There was reported spill in the Atonyekiri community of Nembe Local Government Area of the state.
The community in a protest letter sent to the company alleged that the spills which occurred four months ago, polluted the waters and hindered fishing along the 15 fishing settlements of Atonyekiri.
The indigenes, through the Chairman of Nembe Oil and Gas Committee, Chief Nengi James, said despite series of meetings with the community, Agip and officials of the state Ministry of environment, the exercise had yet to commence.
James said, “The spill from Agip pipeline has spread to cover the marine activities and has led to stop of fishing in the area. Our fishermen are now stranded because their only means of livelihood has been seriously impacted.
“While Agip claims the leakage from the pipeline was caused by sabotage, the community leadership has asked the company to change the pipeline at the site of the leakage to avoid a leak and possible damage.
“After series of meetings including the Joint Investment ventures meeting, the company has failed to honour its agreement on the mop up exercise and changing of the pipeline”.
He, therefore, urged the company to expedite action on the exercise to avoid a face-off with the community, whom he described as “peace-loving.
Effort to get Agip to react to the matter proved abortive as calls made to the Public Relations Department of the company could not connect.
