RIVPOLY Crisis: ASUP Backs Probe Panel
The Rivers State Polytechnic Chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) says it was comfortable with the decision of the State Government to constitute a panel to investigate the recent crisis in the institution.
The union, which said this in a communiqué made available to The Tide at the end of its executive council meeting in Bori, headquarters of Khana Local Government Area, also described as unacceptable and unwarranted, the action of the students which led to massive destruction of properties in the institution.
The communiqué, which was signed by the Rivpoly Chapter Chairman of the union, Comrade Friday Mtama-Bari Good also advised staff of the institution, who are not comfortable with the present system in the Polytechnic to resign as there is no going back in making Rivpoly a centre of academic excellence in Nigeria.
The union, which reaffirmed its confidence in the Rector, Sir Obianko Nwolu-Elechi further cautioned those who want to turn back the hands of the clock to the days of impostors appointed from outside to sheathe their swords.
It urged public-spirited individuals and the state government to assist the Polytechnic, especially as she faces accreditation in December, 2014.
It would be recalled that recently, the institution witnessed students’ riot and demonstration which led to massive destruction vandalization and looting of properties belonging to both the polytechnic staff and visitors.
The riot was triggered by allegations by the students that their member was killed by the Police, an allegation which has been found to be false.
