Sanitation: AEPB Urges Synergy
The Abuja Environmental
Protection Board (AEPB) last Tuesday called on residents of the FCT to interact frequently with the board to achieve effective city sanitation.
Director of the board, Mrs Aishat Adebayo, made the call in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.
Adebayo said that such interaction would be more effective if done through the Residents’ Sanitation Forum.
She advised neighbourhoods in Abuja to embrace the idea of such forum to get optimal benefit of good neighbourliness.
“According to her the Residents’ Sanitation Forum is the coming together of people bound by geographical boundaries like neighbours in high rise buildings, estates, staff quarters and others like that to tackle salient environmental issues.
“It also serves as an interactive platform through which the board communicates its programmes to residents in her mission to keep Abuja clean. AEPB encourages such forums as a people-oriented programme of ensuring that every resident of Abuja has a stake in environmental management,’’ the director said.
She advised residents to view sanitation of their environment as their responsibility, adding that they should campaign for attitudinal change among neighbours.
“Every resident of Abuja should have a stake in environment management and they should inculcate decent sanitary habits among themselves. “The overall aim is to build partnerships between residents, communities and businesses for the purpose of securing a quality environment. “This will go a long way to positively change the orientation of Abuja residents towards their environment,’’ Adebayo said.
She, however, commended residents of Uromi Street in Garki Area 2, Abuja, for their outstanding efforts to sanitise their environment and urged others in the FCT to emulate them.
“The Uromi Street Residents Association is very environment friendly and we at the AEPB are very impressed. “We (board) are, therefore, donating three sets of sanitation equipment to the association as incentive and to encourage neighbourhoods to emulate them,’’ the director said.
