Group Tasks FG On N23bn AfDB Loan
The Voices for Food Security
(VFS), a Civil Society Organisation, has urged the Federal Government to ensure the successful utilisation of the N23 billion African Development Bank (AfDB) loan for the benefit of small-scale farmers.
This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja, last Thursday, by the Chairman of the organisation, Prof Gbolagade Ayoola, and made available to newsmen.
VFS is a consortium of non-state actors comprising independent civil society organisations engaged in the agricultural sector.
The loan, the group said, was sought and obtained for the development of the Staple Crops Processing Zones (SCPZ) at different locations including Anambra, Enugu, Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Niger and Sokoto states.
The statement said the loan utilisation should be done in a manner that would ensure food security in the near future.
It said it should also be done in a manner that would safeguard the livelihood of the future generations, who would eventually pay back the AfDB loan.
The VFS also called for the highest sense of responsibility, financial accountability and transparency in the application of the loan, in the general interest of the people of Nigeria.
The statement said the call was made recently at an enlarged meeting of the Steering Committee of VFS, convened to consider the recent approval of the loan by the Federal Executive Council.
VFS, the statement said, would like to identify with the government efforts on this loan and offer its hand of partnership to the authorities in its disbursement.
It noted that the AfDB loan was considered in the context of public finance that would have long lasting effects on future generations of Nigerians.
It, therefore, cautioned against investing the loan in projects that would not meet the aspirations of the people and become abandoned at the end of the day.
