MMIA Records 1,900 Flights During Yuletide
Over 1,900 flights were operated through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos during the Yuletide.
This was contained in a statement issued by Mr Supo Atobatele, the General Manager, Public Affairs of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) Monday in Lagos.
NAMA said that 170,749 passengers were transported in and out of the airport between Monday, December 23, 2013, and Tuesday, December 31, 2013.
It said that the agency handled an average of 550 flights daily across the nation’s airports, apart from the low level flight operations in the Niger Delta area.
“Traffic peaked last Monday, December 23, when the airport recorded 289 flights, ferrying 25, 184 passengers, while on Christmas Eve, 262 flights were operated, involving 23,625 passengers.
“Expectedly on the Christmas day, the traffic trimmed to 105 flights, flying only 10,772 passengers.
“In all, 80,850 passengers were recorded on the domestic route, while 89,296 passengers made the international route,’’ he said.
The positive traffic trend since the introduction of area radar control in the country, has confirmed the safety status of the Nigerian airspace, restoring public confidence in air travel, he said.
The Managing Director of NAMA, Mr Nnamdi Udoh, was quoted as saying that at peak periods such as this, the agency was always putting in place the necessary logistics to handle the expected high traffic.
