Commission Extends Registration For ID Cards To Saturdays
The National Identity
Management Commission (NIMC) has extended the ongoing national identity card enrolment from weekdays to include Saturdays beginning from January 18, in Abuja and Lagos.
The Director-General of the Commission, Mr Chris Onyemenam, told the newsmen in Abuja on Tuesday that the extension would enable the commission to register all eligible Nigerians.
He said that NIMC was in a hurry to meet the target set for it by President Goodluck Jonathan.
“President Goodluck Jonathan has given NIMC the mandate to register all Nigerians and all legal residents from 16 years and above by December 31.
“The extension is to avail more Nigerians the opportunity to enroll. We are soliciting the cooperation of all eligible Nigerians and all legal residents to make themselves available for this exercise’’, he said.
Onyemenam said that NIMC’s offices nationwide would continue to be open to applicants from Mondays to Fridays between 8.30a.m. and 5p.m. while Saturdays’ enrolment would be from 9a.m. to 4p.m. in Abuja and Lagos.
The director-general said the commission had set up a pre-enrolment portal: www.ninenrol.gov.ng where applicants could fill their bio-data online.
According to him, applicants can thereafter visit any NIMC enrolment centre nearest to them with the printed summary sheet for capturing of their fingerprints and facial photos.
He called on all applicants to take advantage of the enrolment in Abuja, states and local government areas to have their information captured in a single national database.
Onyemenam explained that the new identity card had multiple benefits for the country and its citizens ranging from national security to improved international image.
He quoted the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, as saying recently, that the police would support the National Identity Management System.
“The IG particularly noted that the new identity card, with its numerous security features, will help in eradicating crime, fraud and identity theft.
“According to the I-G, it will also make it difficult for criminals to use false, multiple or ghost identities, and will enhance the work of the police’’, he said.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
