Traders Lament Poor Sanitation At Fruits Garden Market
Although the Port
Harcourt fruits and Vegetables Market is reputed to be the biggest in the Niger Delta region, a visit to the market leaves much to be desired in the area of sanitation.
Investigation by our correspondent revealed that right at the centre of the market, a large pool of smelling and stagnant water welcomes visitors and traders.
Most of the traders spoken to on the matter said it was not within the market authority to fix the environment. Tina who sells oranges and other assorted fruits said they had come to getting used to the environment in which they do their business.
Several effort by our correspondent to speak with market did not yield fruit as all the time the office was always locked.
But a source which claimed to be close to officials of the market and asked not to be named said over the years authorities of the market had had discussions with several chairman of the Port Harcout City Council for help.
According to him since Phalga was the landlord to them and sole revenue collector, it was necessary for them to repair the market.
Asked of the possibility of relocating the market, the source said the market exco has on several occasions approached authorities of the Port Harcourt Cty Council in that direction.
However, efforts to speak with authorities at the Headquarters. of PHALGA was not successful as some of those spoken to on the matter said they were not competent to respond..
