NGO Calls For Reactivation Of Eastern Sea Ports
A Non-Governmental
Organisation (NGO), South-South Youths Democratic Vanguard, has called on the Federal Government to urgently reactate the sea ports in the Eastern part of the country.
The National Coordinator of the organisation, Mr Alafaa Princewill, made the call in an interview with The Tide source in Umuahia.
Princewill said that the reactivation of the ports wound create jobs for the teeming youth in the area.
The coordinator listed the sea ports to include Port Harcourt, Onne, Calabar and Warri sea ports.
He noted that if the ports were made functional, thousands of youths especially in the Niger Delta region would be engaged.
“The Port Harcourt port, for example, is a shadow of itself; no serious activity goes on there, yet people are made to believe that much is happening there.
“When things start working at the Eastern ports, the people will know and will tell the story,’’ Princewill said.
He also called on the Federal Government to look into other comatose industries within the Niger Delta region, the same way it was addressing the power sector.
According to him, government should invest more in agriculture to create jobs for Nigerians who are facing difficult times at the moment.
“Investing in elitist ventures like airport is nice, but it will be better for government to invest massively in ventures that will benefit the poor masses like agriculture,’’ he said.
He also called on government to urgently resolve the lingering industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the interest of the country.
Princewill noted that frequent strikes had negative implications on the nation’s image and the educational sector.
“For government to be disagreeing with its intellectual hub for such a long duration is a sign that Nigeria has a big problem,” he added.
