Rivers Commissioner Escapes Assassins’ Bullet
Rivers State was last Sunday night spared from being enveloped in mournful mood after the Commissioner for Sports, Hon Fred Igwe escaped assassins bullets in Port Harcourt.
According to Igwe, who is recuperating in an undisclosed hospital in the city, he was attacked along Elelenwo Road axis while returning to Port Harcourt from Eleme on the fateful day.
The Tide learnt that on getting to the rail crossing point along the Elelenwo road between 8.15 and 8.30pm, two men blocked his vehicle and opened fire on the car which had him and his driver as the only occupants.
As the Toyota Corolla car with registration number GCG 11 was sprayed with bullets, one of the bullets hit Hon Igwe on the head but the driver managed to ferry him away from further danger to a hospital.
The commissioner’s car is reportedly riddled with bullet holes.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Rivers State Police command, Angela Agabe said that the police had received report of the incident but did not know if Hon Igwe sustained injury or not.
Staff of the Ministry of Sports were seen in groups discussing the incident in hushed tones and giving thanks to God for the survival of their boss.
Meanwhile, members of the Rivers State branch of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) have commiserated with the commissioner over the incident.
