MWUN Suspends Strike, Gives Government 7 days Ultimatum
The proposed strike action scheduled to commence last Monday across the Nigerian Ports by the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has been suspended.
The General Manager, Public Affairs, Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Capt. Iheanacho Ebubeogu made this known on Monday in his office in Lagos while speaking in an exclusive interview with our correspondent.
Capt. Ebubeogu said that the agreement to suspend the planned strike action was reached in a meeting with the Nigeria Ports Authority and the leadership of the Maritime Workers Union, to pave way for dialogue.
He further said that a committee had been set up by the Nigerian Ports Authority to look into their grievances with the aim to addressing them.
According to him”, the strike action has been suspended and a committee within NPA constituted to look into their complaints”.
Confirming the suspension in a telephone chat with The Tide correspondent, the National President, Maritime Workers Union (MWUN), Comrade Nted Emmanuel Anthony admitted that the planned strike scheduled for last Monday has been suspended.
According to him”, there was a presidential directive to the Minister of Labour to look into the issues raised in our notice. Therefore, we decided to suspend the strike for one week to pave way for the government intervention.
On what would happen after one week, he said, “If at the end of one week our demands are not met, we would have no option than to down tool”.
It would be recalled that Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria recently accused NPA of insensitivity, alleging that the authority has been owing their members eleven months salaries and threaten to embark on an industrial action if their salaries were not paid as agreed.
They alleged that NPA has expended over N300 million to pay those they described as “illegal employees” known as Cargo Surveyors in the last one year, abandoning the tally clerks and onboard security men to their plight.
They further accused NPA of planning to substitute the registered tally clerks and the onboard security men with Cargo Surveyors, positing that Cargo Surveyors are not known under the NIMASA Act 2007 that regulates Maritime Labour Activities.
