Oil Spill Hits Bayelsa
A massive spill from an oil well owned by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) yesterday devastated Ewellesuo community in Nembe, Bayelsa State.
Several sources in the predominantly fishing community told newsmen, yesterday, that the spill emanated from Well 62 operated by Shell in the area.
One source disclosed that the quick intervention of the Chairman of the Nembe Oil and Gas Committee of the Nembe Kingdom, Mr. Nengi James, averted violence from aggrieved residents of the community.
“We wanted to take action, but Chief Nengi James helped to cool us down,” said a source, adding that many in the community were tired of frequent oil spills caused by Shell.
Several sources revealed that the residents noticed the spillage early Saturday morning.
One source said a thick film of oil covered the river, mangrove and waterways of Nembe community.
Mr. Timi Standfast, a fisherman and indigene of Ewellesuo community, stated that the spillage covered the sources of drinking water and fishing for the people of the kingdom.
“We have called on SPDC officials and reported the spillage but they have not shown up, while the spill continues,” he said.
Mr. James noted that, although he has prevailed on the people of the kingdom against any unlawful action against the company, the insensitivity of the oil firm to the community’s plight was worrisome.
“I have witnessed over 10 massive oil spillages. None has been cleaned up. Instead, what they do is delay response to the cry of the host communities until the heavy tide washes away the spillage,” he said.
He added: “The poor response of the company to cases of spillages that polluted our waters and reduced the life span of the people of the area to 40 years is worrisome. The action of the oil company is becoming vexatious and unacceptable. The relevant agencies and tiers of government should intervene and prevail on the company to be responsible.”
Shell officials declined to take several calls to their cell phones.
