Estate Agent Arraigned For N1.2m Fraud
An estate agent in Lagos was last week arraigned in court for allegedly obtaining N1.24 million under the pretext of providing an apartment for two accommodation seekers in Lagos.
The agent, Francisca Oyalana (30) was arraigned and her suspected accomplice Damilola Wealth (37) are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing at a Yaba Magistrate’s Court.
The Prosecutor, ASP Felix Ifijen told the court that Oyalana had on March 11 at 10.00am collected N800,000 from one Mrs Chika Osogwu and another N475,000 from Mrs Eucheria Owoh, to provide accommodation for them.
He said the offences were committed at No 9 Isreal Oyekan street in Shomolu.
“The accused collected N800,000 from Osogwu and N475,000 from Owoh totaling N1.24 million, under the guise of providing them accommodation.
Oyalana disappeared after collecting the money and also failed to fulfil her part of the contract. On March 19th, Oyalana was however, apprehended following a tip-off that she was lodging at Chapter Hotel (Ewest House) belonging to Damilola Wealth, located at No 46 Bolaji Omupo Street Palm-Grove,” Ifijen said.
He said the offence contravened Sections 96,107,312 and 409 of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State and could each be imprisoned for up to 15 years on conviction.
The Magistrate, Philip Ojo granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties each in like sum.
Both the estate agent and the hotelier pleaded not guilty to the charge and the case was adjourned to April 24 for trial.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
