Perm Sec Assures On Power Sector Reform
The Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Power, Dr Dere Awosika, has said that concerted efforts should be made to address the challenges facing the power sector.
She said this, while speaking at the fifth Power Summit in Lagos.
Awosika said that the challenges included the non-viability of government-owned power systems, as well as the dearth of investment in power generation, distribution and transmission.
She listed the other challenges as increase in demand for power, managerial inefficiency and leakages.
Awosika underscored the need to examine these challenges within a wider stakeholders’ forum.
She noted that the challenges provoked the organisation of a retreat in January to scrutinise the progress made in efforts to develop the power sector, particularly via the independent power projects, national integrated power projects, gas infrastructure and supply.
She stressed that the new electricity tariffs, power evacuation, the role of the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc. and renewable energy projects were also some of the power sector innovations initiated by the current federal administration.
Awosika recalled that at the power summit held in Akwa-Ibom this year, some issues were raised on how to increase power supply from 1,000mw to 5,000mw by 2013.
She noted that the other issues raised at the retreat included how to put in place an effective gas supply agreement with power generation companies, while stimulating enough investments in gas infrastructure development.
Awosika stressed that encouraging public-private partnerships in power transmission would aid the development of the country’s power sector.
She, however, noted that President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration had encouraged the usage of energy efficient bulbs and lighting systems, while authorising the recruitment of technical staff into the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
