… Hosts Pan African Parliament, ‘morrow
The Rivers State House of Assembly will tomorrow host the Pan African Parliament Regional Conference in Port Harcourt.
The conference organised by Pan African Parliament on African governance would discuss values and principles of public service, administration and African Charter on Democracy elections and good governance.
The chairman, Parliamentary Exchange and Membership Programme (PEMP) of the Pan African Parliament and Deputy Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Leyii Kwanee, who stated this at a press briefing, said the conference was aimed at contributing to the efforts of the African Union (AU) to promoting good governance in Africa.
Hon Kwanee said the conference also expected to foster the conclusions of the 16th AU Summit of Heads of States would sensitise member states to ratify the charter and enhance the efficiency, effectiveness and improvement of quality of public service in Africa.
According to the Deputy Speaker, the forum will offer opportunity for the Pan African Parliament to plan and engage with regional economic communities and regional parliamentary to build synergies and develop a framework within the Pan African Parliament and the regional economic communities.
He noted that the essence of the forum was to interact gainfully to ensure the implementation of African Union policies on the continent.
The theme of the conference, “Promoting Good Governance Platform and Promotion of African Union Legal Instruments”, would feature several international and national personalities including the African Union commissioners for political affairs, Dr Aisha Abdullah, Speaker of House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and the Rivers State Governor, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Amaechi, the special guest of honour.
It would be recalled that the parliament was inaugurated on March 18, 2004 under Article 17 of the Constitutive Act of the African Union as one of the organs provided for in the treaty establishing the African Economic Community signed in Abuja, Nigeria in 1991.

RSG INAUGURATES ARMED FORCES REMEMBRANCE DAY COMMITTEE
The Rivers State Government has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee to organize the celebration of the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day (AFRD) in the State.
The committee was formally inaugurated by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba in Port Harcourt, last Thursday.
Dr Anabraba who also serves as Chairman of the Committee
highlighted the State Government’s deep appreciation for the sacrifices of Nigeria’s fallen heroes who laid down their lives for the nation’s peace and unity.
“These heroes have given their lives for the security and peace of our nation and deserve to be celebrated. The Armed Forces Remembrance Day is an opportunity to show our gratitude for their sacrifice,” he said.
Dr. Anabraba further extended recognition to all Security Agencies in the State, emphasizing the importance of the event in appreciating their contributions to national security and sovereignty.
The annual Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed on January 15 across the country is dedicated to remember Nigeria’s departed soldiers and honouring the nation’s veterans.
