HOS Tasks Accountants On Performance
Chartered Accountants in the Rivers State public service, have been charged to apply their professional competence in the performance of their duties.
The Head of Service (HOS), Barrister. Samuel LongJohn, who gave the charge recently at a meeting he held with Chartered Accountants in the State public service in his office in Port Harcourt, urged them to put in their best and ensure they act like a ‘client to the profession’.
“Anywhere you work, you must be able to show the difference between a Chartered Accountant and the Accountant, how do you show the difference? It is by your work, wherever you are, you must act like a client to the profession”, he asserted.
Barrister LongJohn, who is also a Chartered Accountant, advised them to always identify with the body so as to get a formidable representation to vie for positions at the national level as well as create a platform to canvass for improved welfare for members.
He lauded the high representation of their members in government which include the Secretary to the State Government, the Head of Service, the Auditor General, the Chairman of the Board of Internal Revenue, and two Permanent Secretaries.
He, however, expressed concern over what he described as the ‘cloning of professional certificates’, pointing out that the only recognized professional certificates were that of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAN) and that of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN).
Responding on behalf of members, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Mr. George Nwaeke congratulated the Head of Service on his appointment, noting that it was an indication that Chartered Accountants have unlimited opportunities.
He commended the State Governor, Rt.Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for his quest for excellence in the appointment of key officers in government and appealed to the Head of Service to look into problems facing members as it concerns schedule of work and welfare.
Mr. Nwaeke called for the integration of their members in the public service into the Civil Service now that government is embarking on the recruitment of Accountants into the Service, while stressing the need for professionalism by way of specifying the requisite certificates in the scheme of service.
The Permanent Secretary also urged the Head of Service to look into issues of reward for excellence as a means of motivation for improved performance, and advised members to be proactive and always strive to update their knowledge of the profession.
