Body Tasks Govt On Post-Flood Rehabilitation
As the flood receeds, a youth body in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area labelled Ogba/Ndoni/Egbema Youths Initiative(ONE) has called on government to begin evolving plans on how to resettle the victims of the disaster.
President of ONE, Comrade Felix Ajie gave the charge while donating some toiletries and beverages to flood victims through the Silverbird Communications in Port Harcourt on Wednesday while stressing the need for proactive measures to cushion the effects of the flood.
Comrade Ajie counselled that since the impact of the flood would be felt more after the floods, it was necessary for government to put measures in place so that victims could resettle quickly after the floods.
In the words of the youth leader,” government need to look at the post-flood issues because after the flood there will come a lot of illness, water sources will be contaminated; inshort most sources of water in the rural areas have been polluted. From what we saw on ground there is triple more of mosquitoes than before. So the government needs to look in that direction to make sure that the people do not come back to suffer malaria’’.
So far, he commended government reaction to the plight of victims, who were camped in various camps, especially in the provision of relief materials, but insisted that it should go beyond relief materials to improve sanitary conditions of the people.
Advising the flood victims to take care of their environment to avoid epidemic, Comrade Ajie cautioned them to avoid fetching water from streams, as most of such water sources have been.
“So we as a people must protect our health,’’ Ajie charged the flood victims,’’ before the government comes in to assist. We must be healthy also: I advise my brothers and sisters to take health issue seriously’’, he stressed.
The youth leader also commended Silverbird Communications while praying that the donations would get to the victims to assist them.
