London 2012: Africa Struggles To Make Mark On Medals Table
As the London 2012 Olympic Games enter Day 5 today, Nigerian and other African countries have found it difficult to make a mark on the medals table.
As at press time, China sits atop the table with a total of 18 medals, 10 gold, five silver and three bronze medals
Traditional Super Powers, United States of America was on second place with eight gold, seven silver and five bronze medals while France, three gold one silver and three bronze medals complete the top three countries.
South Africa with one gold medal is the only African country on the log.
The continent has struggled so far in the opening five days, stumbling from one defeat to another, especially, in the team sports.
All the women football teams, Cameroon and South Africa are heading back home after heavy losses. But Nigeria’s conquerors, Cameroon appears worst hit as they crashed out losing all three matches, conceding 11 goals and scoring only one.
In the men’s football event, Senegal, who plays their final group match today, is doing the continent proud with one draw and one victory, over Uruguay in their kitty.
For Nigeria, it has been a sad tale with the table tennis and boxing team headed home last night and D’ Tigers bring in tight corner to qualify for the next round in basketball.
The continent cannot wait for the weekend to come when athletics will commence to have some hopes of medals on the board.
