Expert Urges Review Of BRACED Commission Target
A Professor of Health Science and Medical Management Consultant, Prof. Prince Amaechi Ordu, has called for the review of the recommendation of the BRACED Commission on the development of the Niger Delta.
Prof. Ordu, who gave the call in an interview in Port Harcourt at the weekend, faulted the commission’s adoption of common priority focal areas of development, in agriculture, environment, infrastructure, human capacity and industrialisation, without provisions for adequate health care development reforms.
According to him, the omission was inappropriate considering the reality that healthcare is the leading edge of development adding that provision should be made for effective health care reforms in the Niger Delta states.
Prof. Ordu, a Walden University USA distinguished schorlar award recipient commended the efforts of the Rivers State Government in the provision of health care for the people.
He appealed to Governor Rotimi Amaechi to review existing strategies for the establishment of more health centres in the rural communities.
He decried the non-challant attitude of some medical doctors and other allied health professionals who refused their posting to rural areas, and stated that government should make if mandatory for health workers posted to rural areas to be resident in such areas.
He further stressed the need for increase in awareness through specialised training in organisational leadership to boost the business concept of our hospitals, especially in human resources, management, finance and General services.
The Health Care Consultant also called on Governor Amaechi to upgrade the school of Nursing, and Rivers State College of Health and merge them into a new institution as Rivers State University of Health or Medical Sciences.
He said the merger “will create better leaving environment for the students, staff and administrators due to its research based strength as well as improve the healthcare system in the state as more health professionals will be trained and injected to the field”.
