Amaechi Urges RSG, NASS Partnership On Jobs
Rivers State Governor, Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has called on the National Assembly (NASS) to partner with it in its efforts at reducing crime rate through job creation and employment generation.
Governor Amaechi, who is also Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), made this call when the House of Representatives Committee on Local Content led by its chairman, Hon Asita Asita visited him in Government House, Port Harcourt on Monday.
Governor Amaechi, represented by his deputy, Engr. Tele Ikuru, said the effective implementation of the Local Content Act would go a long way in creating more jobs for the youths, stressing that there should be no sacred cows in the implementation of the Act. He urged the committee members to leave a legacy for posterity by ensuring that every sector of the economy complies with the provisions of the Act.
“If you put the wrong foot forward first, everything else will be wrong, but if you put the right foot forward first, everything will be right and this country will always remember you,” The state chief executive noted, adding that Nigeria would begin to see the benefits of transformation the way business is done in the oil and gas sector,” lamenting that Nigerians can access only “five out of 80 per cent of the nation’s investment in the oil and gas industry.”
He commended the NASS for their courage and ingenuity in setting up the Committee on Local Content, regretting that “54 years after oil exploration began in the country, everything we need in the sector is still being imported,” pointing out that setting up the committee and passing the Local Content Act into law aptly demonstrates the commitment of the NASS to develop Nigeria.
