‘Education, Key To Human Development’
The National Poverty Eradication Programme (NAPEP) said in Abuja on Thursday that education remained a critical element in human development in the country.
NAPEP said in a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary, Mr Danladi Kobi, that education was a basic human right and human capacity development facilitated by strong learning systems.
“Strong learning system is central to the attainment of Nigeria‘s Vision 20:2020.’’
The statement added that the aim of the vision was to ensure that boys and girls, irrespective of ethnicity, gender or disability, complete a full course of basic education.
“Education is another way to eradicate poverty and hunger as well as ensure economic development.’’
According to the statement, the potential tool in the fight against poverty is the Social Safety net programme known as the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) or In-Care of the People (COPE).
It said that the scheme was empowered by the Nigerian society through the provision of conditional grants, making the less-privileged strong enough to support their school-aged dependents.
“The scheme will help to reduce possibility of inter-generational transfer of poverty by arresting the threat that links majority of less-privileged at the most challenging period of their lives,’’ it said.
It said that the National Coordinator of NAPEP, Malam MukhtarTafawa-Balewa, had chosen the right path to improve the lives of the poor by strengthening their current occupation.
The statement said that the poor had been provided with the means and ability to increase their productivity by using simple modern inputs and tools.
It said that the President cared about the plight of the poor and that NAPEP would leave no stone unturned to make sure that they received assistance to uplift their status.
