… Monitors Fuel Diversion
As part of the efforts towards ensuring that Rivers State was not shortchanged in the supply of petroleum products, the State government will soon set up a committee to check diversion of petroleum products meant for the state to other parts of the country.
Rivers Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources, Hon. Okey Amadi who made this known in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt, Wednesday said that the move was aimed at ensuring the availability of petroleum products in the state.
Amadi also explained that the move would help to cushion the effects of the removal of fuel subsidy by the federal government, resulting in the increase of pump price of petrol from N65 to N140 per litre.
While insisting that the fuel subsidy removal would have positive effect on the economy, the commissioner pleaded with the citizens to be patient and accept the new fuel pump price regime even as protests and demonstrations trail the announcement.
In the face of mass action against the federal government, Amadi argued that the development would not be in the best interest of the nation.
Meanwhile, a former United Nigeria Peoples Party (UNPP) gubernatorial candidate, Deacon Akuro Parker, says Nigerians need divine intervention at this critical moment of the polity.
Reacting to the removal of petroleum subsidy by the federal government, Deacon Parker said in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt that the prevailing situation in the country had gone beyond human solution.
He said the major issue government needed to tackle in the face of challenges was corruption.
“It is only God that knows best. As a man, you look at things your own way, but God knows the way it is supposed to be.
“But as a human being, I just discovered that so far, the major issue the government is supposed to tackle is that of corruption,” he said.
