A Nigerian scholar of Rivers State extraction, Dr Obioma Azuonwu, says he has dedicated his first prize medal award of the Coventry University, United Kingdom to the State Governor, Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
Dr Azuonwu who won the best researcher award presented the best poster tagged “Effect of Ultrasound on Pathogens in potable water” at this year’s Coventry University prize award. He is a research scholar in Public Health/Environmental Remediation at the university.
The poster presentation is an annual event aimed at creating broad-based opportunities for all the faculties of the university to showcase their research work to external assessors.
It also affords the researchers the opportunity to display exceptional skills in presentation, claim ownership of the piece of work and general buoyancy of intellectual potency during the question and answer sessions.
Presenting the award to Dr Azuonwu, the head of the panel, Dr Steve Smith described his work as an originality, a novelty, reproducibility and the colossal display of exceptional intellectual proficiencies, amazing and electrifying.
In a letter of congratulation sent to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Nkpolu, Port Harcourt, the host institution of the award winner, the Director of Sonochemistry Research Centre, Faculty of Health and Life Science, Coventry University, UK, Professor Timothy J. Mason congratulated Dr Azuonwu and his Director of Studies, Dr Eadaoin Joyce for the splendid work he has been doing since he joined the research team.
Describing the award as truly a major monumental achievement considering the importance and implication of such an award to the Coventry University and the image of his research team, saying “I am pleased with Obioma, he had already won such an award at the faculty level which positioned him to enter into the wide university competition”.
In a telephone chat with The Tide, the awardee, Dr Obioma Azuonwu said “I am dedicating this award to the Governor of Rivers State, Rt Hon Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi for making significant progress towards developing our state. I encourage him to do more. I am not ungrateful to God”.
According to him, “by the option of this position, I will be representing Coventry University in a regional competition of all universities in the west-midland in the UK. I am so much grateful to God for such a wonderful exposure and experience in a place like United Kingdom which is the melting pot for academics and excellences”.
Obioma Azuonwu, the former/coordinator of coalition of Niger Delta Research Scholars in UK used the medium to sue for peace and unity among Nigerians, stressing that with God, all things are possible, believing that “we will get there with time”.
He regretted that there are a lot of water in River State and the Niger Delta region, including streams and oceans but none is potable thereby giving rise to water wash, water based and water borne infections in the region, pointing out that his research study would minimise the increasing mortality and mobility rate of water borne diseases through the application of more effective and robust means of water treatment options.
